hard drive data recovery

One of my Iomega hard drives has failed, it powers up but not to full speed, and therefore does not register with my Windows XP Professional.

The unit is only 3 months old so still under warranty but what about the data stored?
This is in the form of event photos which are still worth a sizeable chunk of revenue in aftersales.

If I claim under the guarantee will they automatically save the data or would it be more reliable to go to a data recovery service? (min charge seems to be about £250+vat, not cheap).

Any advice or tips most welcome, I do need a turnaround on this pretty quickly (which I won't get if I go the warranty route).

1. most companies do not recover the data for you , they will at best replace the drive.
2. send the company a email asking if you are allowed to attempt recovery , or , if it was their fault it was a catastrophic failure , will they try to recover any data on the drive

I suspect the failed Iomega hard drive is in an enclosure.

If there are no security seals, OR you are not bothered about replacement under warranty you could try to;-

1/ install it in your computer and try it as a slave.
2/ swap it into another Iomega enclosure (to check Iomega’s internal controller card + power supply) and vice versa with the other enclosure.
3/ swap the controller card on the actual H/Disk – with one from another of the other Iomega’s – as long as they are the same brand (W/D, Maxtor, Seagate, et al) and style!

BTW
A company here, is now selling H/Drives with a one time recovery service – as well as a 5yr replacement warranty. Is this the way things are going?

I thought I would bump this post having searched for "Hard Drive Recovery" and wanting to find out about the results with regards to footage saved... and although this hasn't helped me, I had an IOMEGA drive which failed as well.... flippin' IOMEGA. (It's definitely mechanical failure)

If you do happen to change  -  try Lacie.

if it's making the tick of death noise, then I have managed to get one to boot up but only after spending all day switching it on/off banging it and trying. Then transfer the data asap

I've put a ticking hard drive in the freezer sealed in a plastic bag for an hour and that gave me a chance to recover the data, I think it may have had a bang as well wink
I doubt our advice will help the original poster from March 2008.

If the controller has died it's time for Data Recovery, hence the importance of regular back-ups.

I have been using Transcend 500GB Storejet HD units as my back up external drive on overseas traveling during the last 3 years. They are rubber coated and drop resistant to some US Military standard.
My trips tend to be 3 month long ones and back packing. I double store video and photos on both the net book HD and on the external Transcend. Last' year traveling in SE Asia I took along 2 of the Transcend units.

Price has dropped recently as they have brought out larger capacity drives but I tend to stay with 500GB.  Bought two last month at $85 NZ each but have since seen them on special at a chain store for $59 NZ which is about 30 UK pounds.
