I am having a problem with my new maxtor 17.2 hard drive. It seems to work fine except for one issue, the write speed is not running fast enough. My read speed is at about 14 mb/s while my write speed is about 6 mb/s ( it should also be around 14 mb/s). I am at a loss. I am now using windows 98, is using a intel bus mastering driver (provided by microsoft), the DMA switch is activated (this is what sped up the read speed only). My computer is using a LX mother board, pentium 2 300 mhz, 224 ram. My hard drive is even connected using a shielded cable to my primary slave. I have even had the drive replaced in case it was faulty. The only thing I think could be a problem is my bios and it's drivers (pheonix 4.0 release 6 - never been updated)? Or would I be better off getting a new drive (IBM etc.)? I am greatful for any help.

2 suggestions
1) in Win95/98 under the control panel/systems/performance settings mahe the folowing changes
Read ahead optimization - set it to none
Troubleshooting - check mark the 'Disable
write-behind caching for all drives'
Try seting your computer to 'Network Server'
2) Updating your Bios may or may not improve
your HD speed. But a useful site for upgrades
of all BIOS and drivers is http://www.windrivers.com possibily (this site a part) the most useful
site on the web !! Good luck
