I've been looking for a program to index photos / video clips on an external drive. I belong to several sites that give away free clips on a regular basis, I've now collected hundreds of these along with other photo / video material for use as cutaways, backgrounds etc.

I'm looking for a program to index this lot as thumbnails for quick easy browsing and can't find anything. I've tried iMedia, DiskLibrary and several others but can't seem to find anything I like the look / feel of - any suggestions from anyone?

CatDV? http://www.squarebox.co.uk/ Never used it myself, but often considered it. There is a free trial. (I bet it's one of the "others" you've tried!)

"CatDV will catalog all your media assets, not just video tapes but also still images, audio files, Flash files, PDFs, etc. With powerful metadata capabilities (both extracted automatically and entered by the user) that can be used for searching and filtering"

Looking good. a lot more powerful than I had in mind and a little more expensive than I'd hoped (£60) but if it does the job......

I'd always associated CatDV with logging and movie indexing, didn't realise it would do stills as well. Now got 30 days to evaluate it.

Now bought CatDV 9.0 Standard. Does a lot more than what I wanted but will now probably make use of some of the advanced features. The Pro version (£250) would integrate with FCP via XML [;) ] but I didn't really need that. Basically I need to index hundreds of freebie / bought library clips and images and also to index DVCAM files from a Quickstream recorder after each shoot.
