In the old days we used to have insects running about inside our SLR viewfinders and the powerful magnification of same could make them look nasty and dangerous. They'd be quite sharp when they scurried about on the fresnel screen. Apparently they lived on shutter curtain fabric but a spell in the fridge would kill them off.

I had a small insect crawling about behind the front glass of my Hitachi monitor a while ago. I resisted the temptation to squish it, fearing it would leave an imprint as 'screenkill' !
Re-appeared several times over a couple of days, then finally wandered off, never to be seen again.
A colleague reported a similar event - so perhaps not so uncommon?

It's not an insect, it's a bug

I believe this is quite common. I have a dead one in my Dell 2407 screen. The other day another live one was crawling about - now gone. "Thunderbugs?" - who appear more common in certain combinations of warm moist weather?

When I first see them, my heart sinks, until I wipe the screen and find out if they're outside :) or inside :(...

How strange.

I too have a bug crawling around inside my Mac Book Pro screen.

Have you got a name for yours yet?

Mine's been there since 2000, so it must be the mellium bug. Or great-great-great grandson of same.

can you change your desktop to a nice big spider picture and see if he gets scared and clears off?

I have quite a few of the little buggers inside my Dell., about 8 between the lcd and the backlight. They happen in hot summers, I see them crawl about for a few days, then they stop. One of these days, when I've nothing else to do, I'll see if I can find out how to dismantle it and clean them out. I've also got a few on a 20" lcd tv that I use as an external monitor.

Get my test cards document, and cards for 625, 525, 720 and 1080. Thanks to Gavin Gration for hosting them.
Camera settings documents are held by Daniel Browning and at the EBU
My book, 'Circles of Confusion' is available here.
Also EBU Tech.3335 tells how to test cameras, and R.118 tells how to use the results.
