You have a tape that plays back without audio? Firstly try playing it in another DV deck

i know that the speaker is not broke because there is little crackling and when i import it to my computer there is mostly no sound. is it that the heads are dirty? is there any way to clean it?

You can buy head cleaners and funnily enough it's often the audio that suffers first in DV if the heads are dirty .. but the symptoms you describe could also be worn out heads, and over use of a head cleaning tape could have caused this. As I say, first play the tape in another tape deck.

I have an update so I had 2 maxell tapes that I bought and I tried recording in one and the sound works but the sound doesn't work on Sony, Panasonic 63 min tapes is there anything different about maxell that makes it work

There's nothing different about any of the tapes. The posher ones are more polished in an effort to limit the number of dropouts and the longer ones have a thinner substrate so they can fit a longer tape in the same shell. It sounds to me like your tape deck needs a service, and when this is done the technician should check that the feed and takeup spools are working within the specified torque ranges. When correct the tape glides constantly and uniformly over the tape head drum, and by the sound of it yours isn't.

If you run the 1 hour tape to about the 45 minute point, take it out of the deck and open the little tape protection flap on the front of the cassette, how does the tape look? It should be perfectly flat and smooth. If the tape has wrinkles and crinkles along one tape edge, there's your problem. You'll need a tape deck service.

Tom has twice advised you to play your problem tapes in another DV deck, and twice suggested that your camera probably needs a service.

Have you taken his advice?.

Do you mean that the sound on tapes you recorded a while ago is ok?

It could be that a sound recording fault has developed in your camera since they were recorded.
