I use Streamclip to create MP4 files from .Mov originals. MP4s then uploaded.
There seems very little discernible difference whether I use a 5mbps or a 30mbps setting on Streamclip although there is of course a considerable difference in file size and upload time.
If a 30mbps setting is a "waste", and say 10mbps might be "optimum", I would be interested in knowing whether my smaller upload files are beneficial or not to a viewers download limitations.

I think the spec for most streaming sites is 5mbs so anything more may be just wasting time, as for quality and streaming speeds it all depends on the originating codec to certain extent I have still been able to get good quality with 1280x720 files at 1.5mbs from AVC Intra 100 masters but doing the same with HDV was not so good.
Does this also mean that the resultant smaller files are beneficial to viewers who might have download limitations?

Yes it does and the efficiency of the codec comes into that too, I have bad broadband here so have done lots of tests to optimise streaming with only 300k of speed.
1280x720p at 5mbs is my ideal quality to speed ratio but I find that AVC Intra through pro res works a lot more efficiently than HDV did with my Z7 and S270. I also get better quality stream speeds dropping things right down to 1.5mbs or i-fone level at 1mbs with 360p pictures.
Its a balance but as you can change the resolution on you tube it helps people view material at the pixel ratio and rates that suit their broadband speed.
