I have just read Dr Alan Solomon's June article and I am at about the same position. ie trying out various hardware and software to produce MPEG files using a laptop.
In his article he referred to Darvision so I looked them up on the Internet web page and to my surprise they are here in Korea. I sent yem an email requesting a demonstration of their USB device. Here is their reply.
"Dear Mr. Brian Sowerby,
Thank you for your email and interest in our product, MPEGator USB.
It is our new product and it is only launch stage now. We have the
first batch of production but I believe it will take some more
time with the software.
I will let you know when it is ready in the market. We are also planning
to develop this product with video conferencing software which is
attractive I find.
Thank you for your attention and enjoy your staying in Seoul.
With regards,
Sook Kim

So alas they have no product yet.
I am at about the same stage as Dr Solomon in that I have tried some software and hardware and have just purchased Adaptec's Videoh from the states of course.
I will send in my findings in due course.
I am also thinking of buying Videoh soon. So look forward to hearing how you get on.
