Morning all.
A new year, a new venture - for various reasons we're having to close down our film production company, which is a shame but unavoidable. But out of the ashes of big and clever films rises, well, me, under the name Quarterlight Pictures, which those of you who've been hanging around here since the beginning might remember was the name of my old production "company."
Before big and clever was formed I started dabbling in 3D animation using Maya, and compositing in After Effects, mainly because I'd foolishly volunteered to produce a few visual effects for a friend's film. That turned into a labour of love and that love affair has grown considerably, as have my skills (I recently watched a few of my early efforts and cringed at how bad they were!). Said film (Impact Day) ended up with 69 shots, mainly VFX but a few motion graphics too. Since big and clever films I've also got immense pleasure from producing animations and effects, for both corporate films and personal projects.
I've decided that it might be worth a shot offering my services to film production companies who might not have the resources or skills to produce graphical elements for their films. The result is my new website quarterlightpictures.com - quite possibly the smallest site known to man, with just the one page - and a new demo reel featuring a variety of my work from 2006 and 2007.
The reel is Flash video, and is just over 6Mb. I'll be putting a YouTube version and an externally hosted download up soon too, just in case my bandwidth gets exceeded!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the reel and the site, plus take the opportunity to tout my services to anyone reading who might be interested. Feel free to get in touch via the site, or PM me here (Moderators, if you object to this blatant self-promotion, let me know and I'll edit the message!).
All the best, Christian
Hi Christian, I'll save the superlatives but suffice to say it's an excellent advert for what you can do.
All the best for 2008, you deserve it!
I'm blown away! Beautiful!
Great stuff Christian- I'm sure you'll have heaps of work based on that high quality promo.
An excellent piece of work. BRILL.
Cheers.
That is just pure class!
Absolutely love it.:)
Don't tell me how many combined hours that took you to do:rolleyes:
Cheers.

Yes, I'm highly impressed too. Worthy of repeated viewings! :)
Very nice. We have seen the tumbling canister and spidermouse before, but they seem improved. Have you been tweaking since they were last posted?
BobA
Keen eyes Bob! Yes, the Impact Day shots have all been tweaked for the upcoming DVD release, some more than others. The floating can was just colour graded slightly to help it fit into the shot a bit better, but the meteor dodge has had a lot of work done to it! Spider Mouse is unchanged though.
Thanks everyone for all the kind words!

awesome stuff! me being a lover of AE i loved the little sticky board thing toward the begginning. I like doing that kinda thing, illustrator and after effects are a powerful combination!
Craig
Thanks Craig. The board with the map and business cards was something I created for a recent project for the Birmingham Drug Action Team, as a way of moving between sections on the DVD - each section shot in a different drug treatment centre in Brum. As using Google Maps was out, for copyright reasons, and buying such data proving too expensive I drew, textured and aged the map in Photoshop!
I've got Illustrator as part of CS3 but I've never used it in anger yet. Need to get some tutorials to work through. Any recommendations?
Cheers, Christian
Spot on Christian.
Just added it to my favourites, as I'm sure many others will too. You'll be busy for a long time coming.

My opinion , you are linking to a demo reel ..... and a bl**dy good one at that.
You are honest and say it's what you do ....
And it is in ''review my work''
so far nothing wrong .......... unlike many other less than subtle ''adverts'' in other threads.
Best of luck to you .................
Thanks guys!
Impressive stuff!
I don't suppose you do tutorials do you? :D

Thanks. I was thinking of adding one-on-one tutoring to my list of services, so if you're interested let me know and we can arrange something. Reasonable rates, etc... :)
Hi Christian,
I Loved it. In this day in age we are all so used to seeing CGI in movies and TV to the extent that anyone can see if its not just right or if it's 'fake'.
I found yours to be seemless and superior to a lot of the work I've seen on TV and some films.
Brilliant.
Hi JP.

Wow, that is the highest praise I could ever expect to hear, thank you!

hey christian,
i have kind of learnt bits of illustrator by myself but there are some "good tutorials" here on
http://good-tutorials.com/tutorials/illustrator, excuse the pun!
There is a great one on creativecow.net using illustrator and after effects exactly how they were meant to be used:

Im gonna have a go at this soon, perhaps even today, ill see how i get on!
Ciao
