Recently I occurred some problem with my Laptop that has now led to to my SUMOdisk 500Gb USB-2.0 UK not connecting to it.
After discussing the problem with the person that fixed my Laptop they said all I needed to do was re-install it using the disc I recieved with it when I bought it, unfortuantley though I have misplaced the CD that I think may have bn lost when I moved house just over a year ago.
I have a lot of important information that I need to recover so is there anything I can do to rectify this situation.

I'm assuming that the 'important information' exists as files on the laptop's hard drive. It may be worth running a live session of Linux on a CD or a USB pen drive. A recent version of Ubuntu, say 12.04 will read NTFS files assumi9ng that you haven't encrypted them. You can then copy them to an external store, (USB pen drive, DVD-R or to another PC via ethernet).

Is it a standard desktop (3.5") external HDD?
If so there are no driver discs required.
We have a Sumodisc (black casing orange logo IIRC). It's a simple SATA drive with a USB2.0 adapter. We have the lid removed and use it as a poor man's drive dock. Works great.
Is it spinning when powered up and switched ON at the back?
If yes the try the drive on a different computer.
Then try a different cable.
Not spinning? Try a different PSU (they are a common connector).
Failing any of the above put the drive in another enclosure or a dock unit.
If you're local to me you'd be welcome to drop in the office while I try to fettle it. We've got loads of spare bits and pieces.

In case anyone is confused by my previous post, it followed a post that seemed very strange, i.e. English but not really making sense, it was then deleted!

Replies to spam posts often look disjointed when the offending post is removed and the spamming member is banned
