One or Two Processors?

I am going to upgrade my MB soon. I was set on the new Intel 850E with PC1066 memory. The local computer store is trying to talk me out of Intel and go with an AMD dual processor.I am using XP home. I know Premiere will take advantage of two processors which is the main reason for upgrading, but I do use the computer a lot for other things. MY question is: What would be the best recomondation? Go with dual slower processors with slower front side bus or a single new Intel powerhorse with the 533 frontside bus.

I am pretty sure that premiere is specifically written to use the instruction set of the intel processors. I may be wrong but I think if you are looking about performance in premiere you may want to go with dual intels.

Help me out guys. Am I in left field or not?

You mention you are using XP Home - for dual processors you will need Win 2K or XP Pro.

Xp Home is not dual- processor capable (as I understand it).

Yes! you will need a dual-processor5 capable operating system; e.g., Win 2000 Pro or XP Pro.

I've got a Dual AMD MP1900+ setup, and premiere is running just great...all other stuff is running smoother with 2 cpu's...

Hi,

I'm looking for a Dual processor PC, I heard that AMD's produce the most bangs for your bucks, but, because that run hot they need big fans and noise is a big problem?

Is this true?

Here is a URL for dual processors

Hi,

An IT friend of mine, told me, the money I spend on cooling and silencing an AMD dual system, I could have afforded an Intel system instead.

Cooling is relatively cheap, but noise can be an issue, especially for overclockers who run things hot and need massive fans with high air flow. In the end, noise control depends a lot on the layout of your edit area.

Has anyone looked at CPU utilization data on single and dual processor MB?

On my single CPU system a Premiere 6.0 cross dissolve makes about 90% utilization of the CPU.

Tried Premiere 6.0 on a dual Athlon 1800+, Asus A7M266-D MB with 512 meg of ram. W2K system monitor reported average CPU utilizations at about 45% and 62% respectively.

Memory is PC2100/DDR266. Drives are IBM Deskstar ATA100, 7200 RPM, 60 gig.
