Playback from HDD to TV in HD

I've been asked by a mate who is also on FCS2 and works in HD.

What he wants to do is to be able to take a portable HD TV and hard drive based unit around to replace the Tv and DVD player of old. He has the TV with HDMI and I was going to suggest something like a western Digital unit.

Any suggestions? What does he need to do conversion wise? At the moment he has the completed QT files on the mac.

The WD box is what I use, he could also use a laptop to play the files direct via a DVI to HDMI cable.

I use apple TV files on the WD box which are 1280x720p at 5mbs, they will play off a usb hard drive but I also use a 16gb usb stick.

how about an ipad? or even an ipod/iphone. All you need are the appropriate cables and they plug into a tv or other screen easily. We watch a lot of tv from my wife's iphone at home. For client demonstrations I use my mbp and a dvi to whatever cable - easy and I've got the kit already. Dominic

Does the iPod/iPhone/iPad route work in HD, dominic?

Has anybody come across a portable HDTV with an in-built Blu-ray player (yet). I know there are HDTVs with USB ports for media drives, but I bet they're not portable!

yes. Ipad is specifically HD and the iphone 4 is capable too (i believe, but can't be certain without checking the specs - ditto latest ipod touch). Ipad's big selling point is its HDness. D

just checked the specs - both iphone4 and new ipod touch support playback up to 720p at 30fps. So almost full HD. Could certainly be an interesting thing to explore. D

I know there's an SD lead from the older SD iPhone/iPod dock connector to SD composite plug and/or SD component video plugs.

Any idea what the HD iPad or iPhone4 leads goes to?

Just been looking around a bit more and must apologise for peddling duff gen! The current OS does NOT output HD to any external device, it only plays it back on its own screen. What a con! I suppose it's to protect the Apple TV, which does output HD.

So back to the original question - I recommend playback from the MBP to whatever device is available - you can certainly get HD then and at much higher bitrates than h.264 too. Dominic

Update on my earlier comments about using an ipad etc for HD playback: The latest version of iOS, ie 4.3 includes the ability to playback in HD to an external monitor, using the appropriate Apple AV cable. Hurrah! D
