I'm having problems with my PC setup.
I have a PII 333MHz Celeron pocessor running
on a Gigabyte 6BA 440BX Motherboard with
96Mb of 66MHz RAM. I have two Maxtor HDs
a 3.2GB 4200 as my C: and a 10Gb DiamondMax
2500 for video capture. I have an AGP Marvel
graphics card.My soundcard is a Creative SBlive Value. Operating System Win98. I'm down loading video from a JVC GR-DV J70 in a composite video form and PCM sound.
My problem is that using both the Avid
cinema ver1.0 & Ulead 4.2 software packaged with the Marvel I can hear sound when
playing and capturing video into the Avid
software via the line-in on my sound card and
monitor speakers. But on playback no sound.
On the Ulead I can't hear the sound period
but can capture video. I've looked on the
Avid web help pages and the Creative SBvalue page but they either blame it on Win98 drivers or avise to load Win95 drivers for the SB (but where from Win95/98 drivers only available from Creative)or it is a problem they are working on. Help any ideas what I should check to ensure I'm not doing
anything too stupid so i can record sound and get on with some editing. Thanks !!!
Not sure whether there are problems with the SB Live! and Marvel - though we are starting to hear of quite a few problems with the SB Live!.
However, it is VERY easy to get the sound settings wrong - I spent half a day thinking a Rainbow Runner was duff, when, in fact, I'd failed to set one of the level sliders high enough.
I'd suggest two things.
1) Double check (then check again) that you really do have the audio cables correctly connected at both ends.
2) Open volume controls in Windows - by right clicking on the yellow speaker icon at the bottom rght of your screen in the system tray - and check that the appropriate input and output settings and levels have been selected.
If 1 or 2 don't work, I'd replace the audio cables with known good ones and try 2) again.
After that, I'd start hassling Creative in a big way.

I use a similar setup but with a SBlive and it all works OK but as Bob says be careful about levels. Once all the SB software is in it can be very confusing about what mixer to use. Remember that some programs also adjust levels without telling you. ( A favourite trick is to mute on of the outputs )
My only problem is the the SBLive produces a lot of clicks when editing with Avid, however they dont appear when making a tape so I'll live with them.
I had a similar problem when I first got my Marvel and SBLIve installed.
Installing the v1.21 video drivers fixed it.
Apparatnly the SBLive does weird things and cause the marvel drivers to go crazy.
Also make sure its not in the pci slot next to the marvel as this shares an IRQ with the AGP slot (I believe) and the Marvel doesn't like that.
Hi
I,ve got the same setup
Check the following.
1.)Run matrox quick connect tests for video in and out. What do they report?
2.)Be aware that SBLive uses two mixers ,one for record and one for play..to toggle between them simply doble click on a blank area of the mixing desk...check both have the line in channels set correctly.
Hope this helps

Hi,
Just a big thank you to Bob, Pete, Steve &
Tez for their replies. After re-checking the
various mixer/level controls I had no luck
but after loading the v1.21 video drivers
everthing now seems fine and I'm up and
editing. Many thanks.
