I've been running the internet on my upstairs computer from the downstairs computer using a Belkin wireless router for the past couple of years or so. Suddenly the internet upstairs won't come up and I get a message "Local area connection 2, a network cable is unplugged"
I've unplugged the power to the Belkin, leaving it for a few minutes, and then re-connected. This worked and I could get the internet upstairs until the next time I booted up when again the internet wouldn't come up and I got the same message.
I've now done this a couple of times with the same outcome every time.
What might be my problem and how can I fix it permanently ?
belkin is getting old ?
buy a new one
why is it claiming a cable is unplugged if you are using it wirelessly ?
if that isn't the case , tell us all the kit talking to the belkin and whether cabled / wireless
Mice :D
I had a minor break in a cable caused the same problem.
Downstairs computer with NTL modem.
There is an ethernet cable which attaches the router WAN port to the modem. There is an ethernet cable which attaches the router LAN port to the computer.
Upstairs computer.
There is a USB cable from the computer to a Belkin device which just sits on top of the computer.
All the right lights are on or blinking as according to the Belkin manual but the upstairs computer still won't bring up the internet with the message that there is a network cable unplugged.
If that's the Belkin USB stick wireless device that sits on a holder - I've installed (and throw away) 3 of those - totally unreliable.
You should not be getting a cable disconnected message if you're using a wireless connection - it wouldn't matter a cable was disconnected - you're not using it - does the wireless connection signal show in the system tray - next to the clock?
There are 2 ways to get wireless - using the Windows connection or the Belkin connection - could be the wrong one is set up.
It could be someone else very local to you has recently installed wireless on the same channel - try changing channels, personally I'd never use a Belkin USB wireless type device, get something better, the routers are fine though, I've got 2 on my system.
OK, just re-read your post, it's not the Belkin USB stick. Can you access the upstairs router control page - 192.168.2.1 ?
Mains networking, loads better, more secure, easier to setup, easy to add to.
