Temperature Check

I run a I gig Athlon (NOT OVERCLOCKED) in a gigabyte GA72X mobo. No problems, works like a dream.

My neighbour reckons that the temperature of the chip under load, as monitored in the BIOS, should be around 42C or lower. Mine runs higher than that with no problems to date (5 months art the last count).

Does anyone know what the ideal working temperature for this chip should be? If I'm running too hot I want to do something about it, and quickly.

Problem is I already have twin fans sat atop the chip, a fan for the power supply and a case fan (all little noisy at times) in an extra wide case for improved airflow. The case is sat in an area where air flow through and around it is good. Can't see what else I can do if it turns out that I'm running hotter than average.

..and Yes, I do have thermal compund properly spread on the chip, etc etc.

Cheers

Is it a slot 1Gb Athlon or socket?

The thermal profile depens on which version of the athlon you are using.

If it is a socket A chip then the temperature sensor is under the chip. The indicated temp depends on if it is in contact with the chip and if thermal paste was used.

Also BIOS settings may affect the chip if chip idling is enabled using ACPI.

As long as the temp is lower than 50C you should be ok.

Bomag,

Its a socket A. I checked out the AMD website last night and was surprised by their offering.

The site does say that a lot depends on what mobo, case, etc is used and what config its all laid out in; however quoted average safe temperatures there are much higher than I have been led to believe is safe in the past.

I'm not going to worry about it. I have a whole load of cooling in the system. We will see how it goes.

Thanks for the response.
