I need to confirm a probable faulty 2TB Hitachi Deskstar 7200 before consigning it to recycling. It's only just over a year old, was in use a backup of another identical drive that I offload all my video footage to.
It started to unmount itself (or sometimes not mount at all) on my Mac. Because of the limited power of Disk Utility on Mac OS 10.6.6 I have erased and reformatted it using XP on my PC but I can't run chkdsk (in XP) on it for some reason - I get the message that it can't be run except after a restart and then it still doesn't do it after the restart.
Anyone know of a 3rd party disk tester that works on a USB drive (I can't connect it internally and therefore use Hitachi Disk Checker, which would be ideal) ? Could do it on Mac or PC but PC preferable.

Re: Test an external hard drive
I just found a way to connect the drive internally after all so should be ok for now.
