Gents, I started a thread like this when we moved, so I'll do it again. Here's my list so far:
- 24 hour clock, please.
- Message size is limited, minimum 10 characters, maximum 10,000; I need to be able to post 90,000 or so at a time, 10 minimum stops us saying, "OK thanks"
- Moderator status has gone.
As an aside, all User CP settings have reset to defaults, it took me a while to realise that.
Hi
1. Member status (under name, top left of post) for a while was no longer user changeable.
2. Links from the Hexus pages are now broken - and there doesn't seem to be a way from getting from the main Hexus pages to the DVDoctor pages.
3. Moderator status was gone for a while, but is now restored.
Cheers
And the DD MM YYYY date format please.

1. Done , Bob has just sorted it.
3. Done , Bob has just sorted it.
Thanks Bob. So far, so good.
I'm with Paul on wanting DDMMYYYY please, but it's far more important to get the links from/to Hexus working again.
I'd appreciate comments on the date format - please look at older postings ie not today or yesterday, and tell me if the format is okay or where a six figure dd/mm/yy is preferred.

Hi
Basically google seems to have a cached version of large sections of the DVDoctor site as of 1st May 2005.
To fetch it up, get an index of each main section index by searching on the topic of the page, like this, say:
Threads in Forum: DVD, VCD and MPEG
The hit for this will be at the top of google's finds, and the Cached version (at bottom right of link) will bring up page 1 of the index of that forum.
DVD, VCD and MPEG

Then copy/paste each posting subject line/author into google to find the whole thread (or page 1 of it) in the cached version.
Hi
Unless I'm missing something all I get is:
No Thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster
If you can read these files they may be in your cache & it would be a good idea to save them IMO.
In IE6 all you have to do is File, Save As (Make a specified folder)
If it works for everyone else GREAT :)
Hi
No. You need to find google's cached version of each thread, one at a time.... (by entering the exact subject line words and author's name into google search).
Paul,
I get the same results as John using your links but I have managed to rebuild the first 3 pages of So how about an 'Over 50's' page? - Fourth Anniversary Edition (well almost) by clicking on the the 'cached' link in either Google or MSN. I'm still searching for the other pages and cutting/pasting them back into the thread.
Hi both
Which links don't work?
Do the google links I've listed work for you - they do for me...
If those pages open, then of course all the links on those pages are broken - because there's nothing on the DVDoctor database for them to link to.
Google has all those links in its cached pages, so copy/paste the thread title/author into google search.
Paul,
Sorry, I'm struggling to understand this, too.
Could you give us just one concrete example, worked through?
Bob C
Hi
Ok :) Feedback mode: Do you see johnpr98's error message when you click on those links I've provided?
Or do you see something else - if so what.... ;)
Google has all those links in its cached pages
Paul
My gut feeling is that you are reading your own cache or MAC's work differently, I will check with my son's G4 after I've mown the lawn.
I humbly suggest that you save the pages you can see to a folder on your hard drive while you still can.
In IE6 use File/Save As into a folder created especially for the threads
You will have a sub folder & hyperlink for each thread you save afterwards, multiple pages will require a rename, I used (EDIT PAGE2) etc on the end of threads with the same name.
I then zipped up the folder & sent it to Bob (Uploaded it to my webspace).
Regards
Hi
Ok Ok Feedback mode: Do you see johnpr98's error message when you click on those links I've provided?
Or do you see something else - if so what if I may be so bold as to merit a reply ;)
Or don't you see anything? When did you SEE and copy the error message you posted from?
What I'm not understanding is where the DVDoctor error message is coming from when you are searching google... I can ONLY get that when I try to follow a broken link back to the missing DVDoctor database.
Within google I just get links to cached hits at the top of the list, like this one for
Can't play back *.avi from hard drive
taken (copied) from the DVD forum link above:
http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:kSNQTK3W10wJ:forums.dvdoctor.net/showthread.php%3Ft%3D66780+Can%27t+play+back+*.avi+from+hard+drive&hl=en&start=1
or
Compatible inkjets for Epson-900
http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:9yL-74O9qroJ:forums.dvdoctor.net/showthread.php%3Fgoto%3Dlastpost%26t%3D66759+Compatible+inkjets+for+Epson-900&hl=en&start=1
BTW there never was a Mac version of IE after v5.1.... (And it works differently in almost every respect).
Paul,
Each link brings up a Google cached page of the DVdoctor community page with all the threads in it, but when I click on any of the links to the threads I get the message:
No Thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster
Chirpy, if your Vaio's mended, you need to edit your sig.
Hi
Of course, because the DVDoctor database is zapped to oblivion (so far ;) )
But the friendly googlebot visited EVERY link on that page when it stored it, and google has cached ALL the links off the page, including ALL the threads.
So all you have to do is SEARCH google - and as always with google you get the best results by searching for an exact match of several words.
So copy the subject of the thread, and paste that into google search.
At the TOP of the list you will see the DVDoctor link - which of course will be broken...
But at the bottom of the google site description is a little link called 'Cached'......
Click on that and you will see what google did on 1st May when it visited the site. :)
Alan,
It isn't, I couldn't afford £400 for a new screen and told them that was a disgusting price so I asked them to send it back broken. I'm using it now with the CRT monitor from my PC.
Yes Paul,
That's how I managed to find some of the pages to the 'Over 50's' thread. At the moment I'm trying to rescue all the stuff I've still got on my desktop PC which I switched to 'Work Offline' mode last Thursday night. Then I'll email 22 threads to Bob (thanks to both Gary and John for emailing me).
Paul,
Thanks!!!!
As you'll see, I've now got my head around this and used google's cache to update one key thread - this FAQ.
What I did was go to google and search for
DVDoctor I can't post a message - tell me how to do it!
I then clicked on the word
cached
which follows the second of the two urls in the listed item (the URL that, here at least, is green).
I'm off now to see what Astra is doing with HD but will take up the reins again this evening.
Cheers
Bob
Hi
About the html of the DVDoctor pages, specifically the metatags included on every page:
http://www.vbulletin.com/ ." />
This results in google diplaying these words as the site description- for instance:
DVdoctor.community - Can't play back *.avi from hard drive
This is a discussion forum powered by vBulletin. To find out about vBulletin, go to http://www.vbulletin.com/ .
forums.dvdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=66780 - 31k - Cached - Similar*pages
All of which is all well and good for vbulletin, but much LESS so for users google-searching for DVDoctor content.
Paul
Now I understand
My guide
Use your link to find the DVDoctor index
Search for a thread in Google 'MPEG to AVI then Tape'
Click on cached
Example
DVdoctor.community - MPEG to AVI then Tape... DVD VCD and MPEG (http://forums.DVdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=37). - - MPEG to AVI then Tape (http://forums.DVdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=66783) ...
forums.dvdoctor.net/printthread.php?t=66783 - 6k - Cached - Similar pages

Thanks
can we please have signature size set to something at least equal to the size of signature we already have.
the system won't let me edit mine , it says it's too long , but i am removing characters !!!!
Oic, Ok.
Gary,
Sorry, that was me fiddling!
I've increased the quota now, from the 200 characters I knocked it down to, to 600 characters.
Please let me know if you think that's enough.

thankyou.
600 characters is way more than i need , but may be very useful for some people ...... i didn't think you could fill a signature up as quickly as this with only machine specifications in it.
rbarry and myself have noticed that the spellchecker isn't working since the crash. Whether your spelling is right or wrong it comes up with 'The spelling check is complete' but doesn't correct anything - unless you mis-spell something in the 'Title' box. Can something be done about it please? The only alternative seems to be to write your post in 'Word' and then transfer it here. :(
TIA
Dave,
I can see no sign of there being a spell-checker!
There are no options available to me as a user, and none shown in the main control panel for the forums.
Also, looking through the forum software's own support forums, it would seem that a spell-checker is a feature that is not provided by even the latest version of the software that we are using - though V3.5 may have something and I know there are various hacks that can be implemented to add spell-checking - but these are NOT supported by the software maker because they can have some negative impact.
Are you sure that there ever was spell checking with the new software?
Bob C
Bob,
The spell-checker isn't part of the new software. If you cast your mind back to July 2003 you'll find a thread in the FAQ's called Where can I find a spell checker to use on the forum? AFAIKR it worked fine when you installed the new software but it hasn't worked since the crash.
According to the ieSpell website:
[ieSpell] Supports a wide range of web applications including simple text forms, rich text editors, forums, blogs, webmail (including Outlook Web Access and Lotus iNotes) and more!
Dave
and another thing...........is there a way of displaying all posts in date order other than for checking new posts since your last visit? To be able to show all posts in the last x amount of days was a handy facility when needing to quickly find a recent post you wanted to add to or view again.
Rick.
My vote is for mere humble ordinary mortal users to be able to change their Custom User Title. I know BobC said it can't be done - maybe a plea to the vBulletin developers - gotta be the work of seconds to provide a mod-selectable option, as the work's already been done for the mods themselves.
Or is there a conspiracy here...?

Dave,
Thanks for giving me the vital bit of info that was missing from your original post!
I visited the ieSpell site and noted that the program is supposed to work with Internet Explorer and all IE-based browsers, so I downloaded the latest version and installed it.
It works perfectly here - as best as I can tell - on Internet Explorer and on the only IE-based browser I have, Avant Browser.
It does NOT work, though, in FireFox, and won't work with any other non-IE-based browser.
What browser are you using? (and is it IE-based?)
If it is IE or IE-based, I think you may need to do an uninstall/reinstall of the ieSpell software.

Sorry Bob, my mistake. :o
I'm using the latest version of I.E. however my spell checker was getting on a bit so I took your advice and uninstalled/reinstalled the ieSpell software. It's working fine now. :)

Thank you Gary. I am a very simple person and cannot work out where one chooses to view the last 24 hours of posts.
Thanks to Chirpy and Bob for clearing up the spell checker issue. Un-installing your current version of iespell is not required when updating to the latest version.

one of the admins will correct this if it is wrong.
each time you request something using search , it is a unique request , the output is created dynamically by the server.
therefore when you use http://forums.dvdoctor.net/search.php?do=getdaily the server generates the work and returns it with a unique lookup i.e. http://forums.dvdoctor.net/search.php?searchid=6264
to keep a button which will allow you to always pull up last 24 hours of postings here , i create a new 'link' in internet explorer/avant browser and then right click on the 'link' alter it's contents to http://forums.dvdoctor.net/search.php?do=getdaily and that works everytime i use that button.
A search box would be great!
You`ll find one at the top of the screen :-)
A search box would be great!
Just reading previous posts , in the same thread , would have told you search existed.
How would you see a search button , if you don't read what is already on a page.
You`ll find one at the top of the screen :-)
Thanks, I have never seen that before.
