Unwanted calls

It's been quiet on my home phone for a while until last week and yes I am registered with TPS

I just reported a call today  from a Bradford number 01274 782541 to ICO https://www.snapsurveys.com/swh/surveylogin.asp?k=138312369469

Usually it's to do with claiming Government grants for insulation, new boilers etc. if I let them get that far

You would think it would be easy to block this rubbish nowadays, The politicians need to sort this nonsense out ASAP as it must be very worrying for the older folk who rely on their phone for social contact angry

GRRRRR!

Re: Unwanted calls

Give me their address, and I pop over and give them a slap!
Serious though, I still get these irritating calls every few days and I'm on TPS too.

If it's home improvement related just tell them you are renting, and they'll hang the phone up without so much as a thank you.
If it's finance related I can guarantee them that I don't have any PPI or whatever owing, as I've never had a loan - of any sort ever - including mortgages.
As a result my credit rating is presumably non-existent. Weird I know...
It it's a computer related 'you have a virus' kind of thing I tell them I'm on a Mac.

Some of my close family have the caller ID thing on their number turned off, so It says unknown when they call.
I've told them that they will be ignored, but they still wonder why I don't answer.

Of course I'm avoiding some of them on purpose - those are the real Unwanted Calls.
HA

Re: Unwanted calls

It's got so that I'm suspicious the minute my land-line starts ringing, and I'm an ineffectual TPS logger as well.  Maybe one out of 10 calls on the LL are genuine - all the rest are scams, bogus or salesmen.  No wonder people are migrating to mobiles, but will it be long till the same thing happens there?

I had one interesting conversation with an Indian telling me my Windows pc was about to spontaneously combust or something.  After I'd got through the crap I asked him how he felt perpetuating this scam.  I told him of an old dear I know (88) who fell for the line and got expensively sucked in.  Did he think this was a good use of his day, scamming people in this way?  I told him to go off and think hard about what he was doing to people, and would he like his elderly relatives treated in this way?  I was surprised that he didn't hang up ..  and I even had the impression that he hadn't realised the consequences of his actions.

Re: Unwanted calls

Hi Tom

I'm getting 2 or 3 recorded spam calls on my mobile a week as well now

I accept that it's hard to police international calls, however if a known scam UK number can be googled and  has been around for a few months why hasn't a regulatory body suspended them?
Are the resources there or are their hands tied in bureaucracy?

The ICO reporting mechanism feels like hard work with no apparent return for the effort

Name and shame the spammers I say angry

Re: Unwanted calls

Regarding mobile calls, I have an long address book entry where I add nuisance numbers after they've called me.
Anytime one of those number rings it plays a silent ring tone, with the vibrate turned off, so I hardly ever notice it.

It's already happening - I get about the same number of scam calls on the mobile as I do on the land-line.

Re: Unwanted calls

After another quiet period I am receiving one or two spam calls a day and I am reporting them all to ICO http://ico.org.uk/for_the_public/topic_specific_guides/marketing

I am hoping that they can take the appropriate action when complaints are made, they give feedback here

http://ico.org.uk/enforcement/action/calls

Quote:
During this quarter (April to June 2014), we issued 85 third party information notices to telecommunications service providers, to try to identify a range of telephone numbers being used to cold call consumers.

We use third party information notices to try to identify the subscriber details of telephone numbers we believe have made unsolicited marketing calls to consumers. Often, where it is possible to identify the numbers, they link to overseas organisations and we make referrals to the appropriate regulatory authority, if there is one, in that country. As a result, in this quarter we have made four referrals to other European regulators via the Consumer Protection Cooperation mechanism, and made two referrals to the Federal Trade Commission in relation to suspected PECR breaches.

Read our advice about what to do if you have received unwanted sales calls

We published the above information on 30 July 2014. We plan to update it each quarter.

Re: Unwanted calls

At least on the mobile it's easy to enter PPI spammer into the contact details so next time they call you don't need to answer it. I now use one of my website addresses with a catchall for any site that needs and email address, and I sign up as RAC@XYZ.com or asda@XYZ.com, and you'd be amazed how quickly these start to show up in the email spam feeds - from quite respectable companies, who have flogged your details.

Re: Unwanted calls

Since reporting every call to ICO I've had quiet days and up to 2 spam calls a day, Solar panels mainly.

I rang ICO to see what the are doing about my reports and everyone elses, they work together with all the telephone providers including international and block or/and prosecute if possible.

The spam call I had yesterday said press to to reply or 8 to be removed from their list, ICO said do not respond after picking up the phone or your response indicates a live line and a live number that can be sold on.

My provider is Talk Talk who are OK as long as you don't call customer support devil

HI John

I also activated "Last Caller Barred" from TalkTalk and so far it seems to work but I think the caller, Barclay's, changes their number so I had to bar another one today.  At this rate I will run out of numbers to bar.  I think TalkTalk allow up to 10 barred numbers. Nuisance is not the word to apply to these people.

Hi Harry

So far I haven't had to use 'Last Call Barred', I hope Talk Talk take notice of  these numbers that customers are barring and apply a global ban

I installed a Calls Blocker for my android mobile and that stopped one private call this morning according to the log smiley

MEL Research Ltd is an independent market research company based in Birmingham. Each month MEL Research undertakes telephone market research interviews for a variety of councils, police forces, housing associations and other client organisations.

We are a Market Research Society (MRS) company partner and abide by both the MRS Code of Conduct and the Data Protection Act. You can check our accreditation with the Market Research Society by ringing their Freephone helpline: 0500 39 69 99.

We may have called you because you are the customer of one of our clients and they provided us with details of customers to contact. Alternatively, your number may have been generated at random by a process called Random Digit Dialling (RDD).

RDD is an entirely legal process. The reason for using RDD phone numbers is that it allows Market Researchers to contact a wide variety of people, including those who are registered with the telephone preference service (TPS) and/or ex-directory to provide them with an opportunity to participate in research.

Market research activities are exempt from the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and ex-directory rules of cold calling as we readily accept refusals to participate and are not involved in any form of sales or selling activity.

And if this is the system used, Random Digit Dialling (RDD), the probability of being dialed 2 or 3 times within a couple of minutes doesn't seem to be random.  If only the Lotto work the in same way!

Hi Harry

When you are canvassed at the next election, ask your prospective MP what he's going to do about changing the law to stop this cold calling invasion of privacy, all done in the name of market research!

I had a call the other day from a guy telling me that my website was old fashioned & offering to "Bring it up to date" I pointed out that as I`m pushing 70 I was quite happy with it! He hung muttering some rude comment, so I rang the number back as it was displayed, although I put 141 in front to make my number withheld.  It was answered by an elderly (well, older than me) lady in Manchester who said that she was continually receiving calls from people upset by the male caller. She had informed her call provider, Sky, and they were investigating! Looks like somehow the guy had hacked her phone number.
