Has anyone succeeded on a limited budget -£20 million (only joking),in transfering video to a format that can be played back in cinemas. Is this feasable/possible in premiere or a job for a facilities house and what sort of costs per min. are we looking at

Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated

What you are thinking about is possible but very very expensive!!! Lars Von Trier (not sure if that is correct spelling) has shot feature films on DV, (I think) The Idiots and Dancer in the Dark. There are several post production/lab facilities in London that will do this, but as I said it really is very, very expensive.

For a 90 minute film the cost is around £30,000. We did some tests with the mini DV format transferring it to film and playing it in three local cinemas here in COrnwall.

Close ups were gorgeous, medium shots perfectly ok distance shots and distance pans showed up some artefacts.

Sure, if you put them up side by side optical wins hands down but when you're settled in your seat it's acceptable.

Thanks Des/mbridge,
Des, what format did you deliver to the production house and is there a minimum charge, or is it based on minutes + would you know of a similar facility up North and finally - why is it so expensive?

We gave them a straight mini DV tape. It was a friendly job for all of us to see - the production house as much as ourselves. I only know of London houses. Expense, not sure but it is a lot of work and computing power. The DV format is only 720 x 576, I guess they're laying it sown to at least 1200 lines maybe 1500 - that's a lot of infilling to be done.
