I'm just doing some R&D into building my own video editing computer. Can anyone suggest any good books or websites that will explain the process step-by-step???
and... can you save a lot of money doing DIY building or is it better to pay a bit extra and get a company to build it???

I have just built my second dv editing system
As an IT professional I have no difficulty in doing this. In fact it is'nt all that difficult To answer your question on costs. If you use the best hardware avail u will not be able to build it much cheaper than a bespoke system. The benefits of building your system are control, management and fixing it when it goes wrong!
Bespoke systems are ok but if you do not feel confident to do it yourself then I would certainly recommend going to one of the specialist DV editing builders for a
system
