I have set up a couple of 5 minute video streams using realplayer

try http://194.35.199.137/streaming/skye.rmvb or
http://194.35.199.137/streaming/finland.rmvb
may need adsl or better for this to be a true streaming file

ONLY LIVE FROM 9.00am TO 5.00pm , IT RUNS ON MY WORK PC , NOT A LIVE SERVER.

I also thort streaming servers where expensive?
So and this may seem stupid could I stream from my actual computer? If so how would I do this?

Hi
If you (or others) find configuring Apache isn't your thing, then QuickTime will easily allow 'progressive downloads' from any normal ISP's server - playback starts as soon as the first bit of the movie is downloaded.

To find out about encoding QT for the web read the QuickTime articles in the reference section of the first CVE DVDs, or go to www.apple.com/uk/quicktime and check out the extensive Tools & Tips pages - there's a ton of stuff on the web site, including how to embed html and active-X movie links into a web page.

You need the pay-for QuickTime Pro version to do this.

Apache, PHP, MySQL, Perl go hand in hand, they are open source and Free, but beware, if you are not web savvy, these will really confuse you.

Forget Real player, QuickTime gives superior quality results and is more user friendly, it would appear that QuickTime is the industry standard web player by those in the know, also, QuickTime is installed on all new PC's and Macs, unlike the others.

The BBC are archiving all there footage from yesteryear into the QuickTime format for people to download (PAL 720x576) over the next couple of years.

As for QuickTime settings, I use the following:

Size 320x240 (smaller standard size is 240x180)

Key frame every 250 (this is UK PAL standard, don't use anything else here).

Turn "Limit data rate" Off and leave it off always, you can't create web movies with the dial-up 56K brigade in mind these days, sorry, but those guys have to be ignored otherwise the quality by setting data rates is simply diabolical. I have been told this by several pro web designers, the trend is now going towards producing sites for broadband users, a shame, but that is just the way it's going, more and more people are now on broadband. Similarly, site designers are now designing sites for the 17" with 1024x768 minimum (CRT) screen and not the old 14" screen with 800x600 res. Only sites that were designed years ago are based on this, newer sites are not. The BBC and Apple are going to have to totally redo their sites soon though as I don't know anyone with a 14-inch CRT anymore...

Audio compression: either QDesign or IMA4.1
Mono and 16 bit at 32 KHz (32 or 11 doesn't make any real difference to file size).

Filters: HSL Balance, move "Lightness" up to 108 as web is different to broadcast, it needs lightning slightly with this codec.

Remember that on average dial up takes 3 minutes (sometimes much longer) to download 1 MB.

If you use the above settings you will get a 3 minute movie in under 5 MB.

For broadband users, this will be instant, for dial up they will have to wait 5 minutes before anything happens.

Hope this helps.

i set mine up as a purely HTTP server , so people can read files etc , but cannot upload to it.
i have a seperate program called cerberus as an ftp server.

It would appear that Gary's answer above is aimed at the last post by stoo.

Two people posting pretty much at the same time in this instance ;)

Hi
The vital bit of info missing from this good post is the video codec you are using.
QT version 6+ defaults to MPEG-4. This is fine, but better results can sometimes be achieved with Sorenson Video 3 (with no keyframes set).

For professional encoding its better to use the pay-for Pro upgrade to Sorenson 3 which certainly gives better results - once you've read the manual and understood the parameter settings.
Sorenson 3 Pro is even more controllable using Cleaner to enable multi-pass VBR encoding.

Sorry about that "Sorenson 3" in QuickTime Pro.

How could I forget that part? duhhh

For the record I have tried many time with MPEG4 and found the file size difference to be very little indeed, also the quality of MPEG4 has always proved to be worse than Sorenson, but that could be just the way I'm using it.

If you dont like Real Player, you can use Real Alternative.

at work where i have authority to run apache server i used the full address

so network domain = uhi.**.uk
server name as = avtech

which gave ( cos the server is at home with me at the moment ) avtech.uhi.**.uk

this allowed people to access using that address or using 194.3*.199.13*

1. no question is stupid if you don't know the answer

2. server name is whatever you want.

3. if they already give you webspace you don't want your server to have the same name

call both things whatever you want , then when finished installing open the file called httpd.conf in C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\conf

in there you will see a line similar to this

# If your host doesn't have a registered DNS name, enter its IP address here.
# You will have to access it by its address anyway, and this will make
# redirections work in a sensible way.
#
ServerName vaio.***.ac.uk:80

what i would do , if running the server at home is

change above info into

ServerName 83.104.61.96:80

that is my home ip address and port 80

if you are lucky and try typing 83.104.61.96 into the address bar in internet explorer you may be able to access pages running here at home.

i'll alter the above info tomorrow to hide info.
