Lots of disagreement in the follow-up comments.
Not sure I like the info that:
"Enterprise SATA" drives OTOH are now available and are recommended for raid-5 use. Naively we assume this is true because they should be more reliable than a "desktop sata" drive.
In reality they are less reliable. In particular they have less retry logic. So if a sector is failing, they will return an error to the sata controller more readily than a normal drive.
Although this seems wrong, it gives much more control of the situation to the raid controller."
