Microsoft want you to use Edge (IE) with Bing (For advertising revenue methinks), I still prefer Chrome and Google.
The large bottom left hand 'Edge Search' box can be hidden so no problem
My Seagate Dash board programme is no longer supported (Don't recall using it much recently), Thankfully my network drives are still safe, although I had no Internet or Network connection until I had rebooted
I still prefer VLC to MS's default media player for audio and video playback, some of the picture was lost when playing Full Screen.
I've also reduced the number of and rearranged the (8.1 style) Start tiles
The 'email' Start tile wanted to take me away from my preferred Windows Live Mail 2012, which is still there with all my emails
The date format in Excel has changed from 19/07/2015 (Not available in Format Cell) to 19-07-2015
Office 365 on Windows 8.1 still has the 19/07/2015 format opening the same file?
Too sum it all up, I have been busy trying to make Windows 10 back into Windows 7

If I select one of those / options I can use the 29/07/2015 format in Excel

Did a forced upgrade on my 8.1 64bit, no problem apart from having to reset my home network folders and permissions.
Seems a lot faster to respond, also starts faster and, comes out of sleep quicker.
Don't forget to save an image of your OS drive before trying.
You'll also have a new key for Windows 10, you can download a tool HERE to access it once you have 10 running
The Tablet installed Windows 10 whilst I slept, I just had to wait a while when it loaded settings for the first time this morning.
Everything works as before, most of the first ten minutesI was removing Windows 10 additions, I'm not a fan of Bing Search or using Cortina.
I quite liked the search option in Windows 8.1, as it worked on my tablet finding settings, I have't found Windows 10 search to be so be so good for this, early days though.
I've found that a simple restart simply solved my network settings on my two installs.
I also reset my default video and audio player to back to VLC
On the desktop I thought using iplayer and VLC the video quality was improved.
I'm wondering if some users would notice the difference when the improvements/crap are switched off/removed

My laptop has a few issues
1. The number pad won't work in Windows 10, although it works fine when I type in my pin number log in!!!!
2. Search won't work in 'Settings'
3. When I signed into One Drive 'MyDocuments' became read only, I changed the folder to Full Control and other fixes, re-boot and it was back to read only, I unlinked One Drive and normal service was resumed.
Others have also had these issues, I may try a reinstall to see if that fixes things, I think it maybe an easier ride when upgrading from Windows 8.1
Try sfc /scannow in the cmd panel, it replaces all the bad system files.

I tried "sfc /scannow" and rebuilding the search index files with no improvement, I'll try a refresh of Windows 10 later, my tablets work fine and are a good yardstick on how Windows 10 should work.

I went back to Windows 7 on Fridaywith the Windows 10 restore option, however Windows 7 wouldn't start after closing down, various options tried without success.
As I had a back up system I decided to reload Windows 7, then found out my Windows Live emails weren't backed up by Memeo :( I couldn't copy them off the hard drive either, User rights probably
I had some more emails on my tablet and many were on the server, a lesson learnt with email saving there.
So for now I am staying with Windows 7, Windows 10 works fine on my tablets, my wife;s laptop will also be staying on Windows 7 for now

My current thoughts are, even if M$ say your computer is OK to upgrade, check on your manufactures website that Windows 10 drivers are available.
Also double check your backup system is backing up what you think it is.
My laptop liked it's fresh reinstall of Windows 7 and lot's of crap must have been lost as well lol
After the success of Windows8.1, the next is Windows 10. I just hope it would be much flexible than Windows 8 and 8.1; also having some new additional features. Thanks John for sharing so much about it. I'm the one not that much strong technically hence find problems always. Well, thanks to my service provider which help me out each time. It very much errs on the side of caution but, don't forget, upgrading an operating system is a far more elaborate operation than updating, say, Adobe Reader.

Here's my take on the free upgrade to Windows 10.
In the short-term, I don't think you should do the upgrade.
In the not-too-distant future, though, I think you absolutely should - it gives you a new and very powerful underlying operating system that will stay up to date for free until 2025.
However if you do carry out the upgrade yourself and it goes wrong, you can be in deep trouble so, the very least you need to do is create a FULL backup of the laptop (ie not just data but the entire hard disk and all partition on it) - and store that backup on a large-capacity external hard disk drive.
To do a backup you should buy a large-capacity external hard disk, such as this, and download, install and use Macrium Reflect Free backup software.
But please talk to me about using the backup software once you have the hard disk and have downloaded the backup software.
Even though Windows 10 only went live just a few weeks ago (on July 29), I've now had quite a lot of experience doing this upgrade (from Win7 and Win8.1).
On those machines that I have upgraded to Windows 10, I've installed a program that makes the interface of Windows 10 look much like the interface in Windows 7/Vista/XP.
Windows 10's own interface is much better than the interface on Windows 8 or 8.1 but, in my view, is not as nice to use as the one for Windows 7/Vista/XP.
However, people who are eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 10 shouldn't just rush in and do the upgrade.
Instead, they should also check for compatibility of their important software (I know some older versions of Corel software are not compatible, for example) and key hardware (printers, scanners, whatever).
In theory, the tool that gets installed to carry out the upgrade to Windows 10 makes this check - but I wouldn't trust it totally and, instead, would do Google searches about compatibility of specific products. I might also use the site that Microsoft has where you can go to check the compatibility.

What I should also say is that, since I first wrote that email, I have done a good few more upgrades and, just yesterday, one upgrade from Vista - this was using a paid version of Windows 10 and was destructive (everything on the system drive gets erased).
My strategy, always, when doing these upgrades is simple - leave as little as possible to chance.
That means at the very least, before doing a full backup of the drive prior to the upgrade from 8.1 or Win 7.1 (SP1), I will:
* Use CrystalDisk Info to check the health of the hard disk - THIS IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL!
* Make sure Windows is up to date and then use FileHippo (and my own judgement) to ensure applications are up to date
* Use CCleaner to do a cleanup of Windows and apps (I don't let it empty the recycle bin or delete Internet cookies or history)
* Repeatedly use CCleaner's Registry tool to get rid of broken registry entries (always backing up the planned registry changes, when CCleaner offers, before continuing)
* Use Windows' own Disk Cleanup tool (accessible by right-clicking on a drive) to get rid of as many of the remaining temp files in Windows as possible
* Use the free version of Malware Bytes to get rid of Trojans and Malware (and then follow up by using HiJack This - a potentially dangerous tool but useful if you know how to handle it)
* Install Auslogics Disk Defrag (without installing any of the crap that is offered - rather furtively) and use it to defrag and optimise the hard disk
Yes, I could do none of this stuff (and not even a backup) but my clients can and do expect me to take as few chances as possible - whereas, a few people who have come to me for help AFTER the Win10 upgrade has gone wrong had taken no precautions at all.

Microsoft never seem to learn, do they? There is a continuing arrogance that says "This latest version is wonderful (because we say it is) and you will like all the changes (because we say you will)".
Hence all the faffing about that you highlight in your message. Microsoft have never twigged that what yer ordinary average user wants is an upgrade that improves the underlying engine but does not affect the look of the screen or the programs. Instead, it's rather as if the buyers of all new cars have to learn to use a steering wheel that is mounted on the roof while at the same time finding that the pedals are reversed.
What saddens me is the number of computers that are junked because they are "too slow" or "take too long to boot up". when all that wrong is that Windows is clogged up.

How many forum members have moved on to Windows 10?
I have done so on my Surface 3 - with great difficulty! To do an upgrade, there has to be enough room on the C:\ drive to accommodate an image of the windows7/8 install, or the updater will not run.
I had not really got used to the Windows 8.1 with which it came, but I definitely prefer 10.
The other three systems in the house all have versions of Adobe CS6, so W7 will remain the order of the day there.

I had intended to upgraded to Windows 10 after I had finished my present editing tasks just incase Adobe Premiere/Encore CS6 and After Effects CS3 would not run successfully. Your post, to me, does seem to suggest that I am correct. So if I want to keep using these Adobe programmes with Windows 7 would I be wise to forget about W10? I have no desire to upgrade to Adobe CC.

Sorry about the delayed reply - I have been away for a few days.
My reading of posts on the Adobe forum suggests that many people are having problems with Windows 10, even, in some cases CC2015 users. So as I am quite happy with W7, I shall stick with it. My Surface is a different kettle of fish - it was designed to be used with W10, so the change made sense. Especially as it came with W8.1, and I did not like the interface at all. Also the Surface is the only device that my wife or I have which is not on W7. So there was nothing to be gained by remaining with 8.1 there.
I assume teething problems with current software will be sorted out, but I cannot see Adobe doing anything to make non-CC versions of their software compatible.
I assume that the compatibility mode is available in W10, which may help. But as W10 develops it is likely to become more and more problematic for older software.
I have seen articles that suggest Microsoft are going to become increasingly aggressive over the update. At the moment it appears in Windows update as an “Optional” update for Windows 7 and Windows 8 computers. This means users who have set their version of Windows to accept all updates will find the Windows 10 installation process will begin automatically and they will need to actively cancel it.
But in “early” 2016 things will become more aggressive and Microsoft will again reclassify Windows 10 as a “Recommended” update. Given the default setting on Windows 7 and Windows 8 is for all Recommended updates to install automatically this means the vast majority of users will find the Windows 10 install process starts up on their machines.
At that point it will become a nuisance, as you will have to keep an eye out for sneaky updates, and either unselect it from the update list, stop it or rely on the 31 day window after updating when downgrading is easy. I hope that you will be able to "hide" it!

A quick update on my Windows 10 thread for those interested in my experiences of upgrading my laptop, which is not supported by Toshiba for using with Windows 10
I decided to have another go with Windows10 and bought a new and bigger 1TB drive for my old Windows 7 laptop, As per Bob's excellent advice I used Macrium Reflect to make a copy of my Disk disk to an external hard drive and also cloned Windows 7 to the new 1TB hard drive, I then replaced my original Windows 7 hard drive with the new cloned 1TB drive and upgraded to Windows 10 from there, once the new hard drive had been installed after a restart.
So far so good, my keyboard, number pad and touchpad are all working fine this time, I quickly installed the English Language Pack to sort out my Excel date probs, I've also fixed the annoying 'Search not working in settings' problem with the help of this link http://www.tenforums.com/general-discussion/12380-search-settings-does-not-work.html
If it all goes wrong this time around I can reliably go back to my old Windows 7 hard drive, which is frozen safely in time

I've been on W10 now for around 3 months without any issues. I have it on my desktop and main laptop, both 64 Bit and on an older laptop at 32Bit. In each case it was an upgrade from W8. I also have W8 on a small netbook but so far this hasn't been offered an upgrade. Perhaps because I don't have it in use enough. I used to use it as my travel computer but replaced it 18 months back with an ex-lease hi spec Dell which is my main laptop now for travel and editing on the go.
Generally I have found that my friends also have a trouble free upgrade result. So my comment to folk who wonder about up grading is "go to it".

APPARENTLY SOLVED BY CHANGING POWER MANAGEMENT SETTING. Here's the deal. The Win 10 installation with the new network card drivers seemed improved but still completely erratic upon wake up from sleep or restart. HOWEVER, it appears the real problem all along was a setting in the network card properties (power management) that said it was OK to turn off the network card to save power. I unchecked that box, and have had multiple restarts and awakening from sleep without incident. It might seem stupid and obvious not to be looking at this angle, but who would have guessed the card was acting erratically because it was intermittently turning off to save power.
I hope my upgrade experience is of some help to others who are wishing to upgrade, back up with Macrium and use google is my advice 
I haven't been in for a while, but recently upgraded to Win 10 for the 2nd time on a new self build PC. I say 2nd time because after the first U/G I went back to 8.1. But since the free upgrade deadline is looming, I reloaded. First and main priority on both occasions was to 'Gag' Cortana!
I've had no problems with it so far
I currently have a cold.... so, with little prospect of a good night's sleep I thought that upgrading to Windows 10 might be an interesting way of spending the wee small hours......
Updated from Windows 7 on a home built desktop. I was surprised at how simple (if a bit long winded) the whole process was. I made sure to disable all the features in the recommended 'Express' settings, and have ended up with a a machine that seems to work just fine.
I was very surprised to find that all my installed programs - including the very old versions of Photoshop and Cool Edit I still have installed seem to work OK. I haven't tried everything yet, but all my desktop and taskbar icons seem to be in place and working so far.....
A much easier process than I thought it would be .... mind you, writing those words might be tempting fate a bit....
I did a very successful upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 last week. Took a bit of time to turn off all the unwanted things, and still getting to know it. Ccleaner got thrown out, but everything else seems to be working. Definitely faster at rendering.
This iso is better than the one I used last August, when Vegas didn`t work properly.
After my struggles of last November, I held off updating my editing machine, laptop and my wife's system until last week. The process has improved vastly since last November's struggles with my Surface, and now runs quite smoothly. You are also given a chance to switch off many of Microsoft's data gathering features during the install.
The laptop and wife's systems were very quick, and everything except Speccy from the same stable as Ccleaner works correctly, including Photoshop CS5.
My very complex system with its multiple hard drives and Areca RAID took over two hours, but there were no hitches. Everything works as it should, in many case the system is subjectively faster. Even my ancient Focusrite Saffire works - Focusrite thought it would not.
I have Audition, Premiere, Photoshop, and after Effects CS6 on this system, and all worked perfectly from the start.
Ccleaner works fine for me on all four systems.
Windows 10 does not like Internet Explorer, though. You have work to do to access it, and several web pages cause it to close and re-open the tab. Unfortunately I do not like Firefox, and Norton Internet Security is not yet up to speed with Edge.
I have installed Spybot anti-Beacon to keep Microsoft at bay.
Onedrive cannot be un-installed, but can be removed using Group Policy Editor. Unfortunately this is only available in the pro version of W10. I have done what I can with the two home systems, and I always use a local account anyway, so Microsoft are kept away from my data.
Waited until the last chance so updated Win10 today. Must say I am impressed with how easy it was to upgrade. I had already downloaded the file a few months ago so the actual installation took no time at all. So far all software seems to be working ok. Adobe Premiere CS6, Encore, PS2 and even Paint Shop Pro from 1997? Fingers crossed but I am impressed.

Just finished the upgrade. As Harry said, it was all very easy. (I may regret those words). Responses are a bit quicker.
I installed Windows 10 at the last minute on 29th July, as a free upgrade from Win 7/64. It was an uphill struggle. I started at about 3-15pm, and I did not finish until about 11pm. It took the last 90 or so minutes to get Win 10 and Norton to talk nicely to each other, but I managed in the end.
Having got everything to work, I put the memory of the problems behind me, but now I have noticed another problem. The battery runs down faster than it did before. If it is just the battery showing it's age then I will buy a new one (and cry all the way to the bank). However, if it is Win 10 galloping away with the power I would rather know about it.
Has anyone else noticed an increased power drain after installing Win 10?

The battery indicator on my Toshiba is wildly inaccurate when charging between 20% and 60% (01 minute to full charge etc.), the Toshiba health guide also said my battery was on it's way out, I checked with my Windows 7 clone drive and my battery was fine, It all seems to have settled down, I thought I was losing power faster with Windows 10, however it's just a inaccurate battery indicator.
I have just bought a cheap Dell D630 laptop on Ebay with Windows 7 installed, so I can swap a hard drive in with Windows XP installed when needed, as some older programmes have advantages on a computer with a firewire connector, the laptop won't be allowed on the internet unless it's a special occasion My wife also has a old D630 laptop and it runs Windows 10 absolutely fine. a good solid workhorse.

After 18 months of Win 10 with not really any problems, I am now back with Win 7.
Problems began when I was asked to record from a VHS tape. After much web reading, I managed to load the required OHCI legacy driver, and it worked.
The next problem was with a WiFi Epson printer. Win 10 was unable to connect to the printer, although it could tell me the ink was low. Again much wasted time. Microsoft`s help and instructions were no help at all, and this was the deciding factor that a return to Win 7 was necessary. Upon installing the printer, Win 7 found it imediately and all is peaceful again....

i sorted one for a friend that required the printer to be connected by usb during setup , then you could use it wifi only

The printer is an Epson Xp335. Fairly basic but ok for what I want. It is connected via USB to my wife’s PC, so I should be able to use WiFi.
Under windows you need to connect the printer by usb when requested during driver install

How to install Epson Expression Home XP-335 driver:
Switch on your computer where you want to install the driver.
Until unless you suggested to connect USB cable to the computer, please don’t connect it.
Download the setup file from above link if you didn’t download them yet. Run the setup file as administrator. It triggers to start the installation wizard. Then follow the instructions until to finish it.
At the execution of this wizard, you have to connect USB cable between Epson Expression Home XP-335 printer and your computer.
So wait for that and connect only when it asks you to connect. It will detect the Epson Expression Home XP-335 printer and go ahead to next step if all goes well.
Input the values for each step in the wizard and complete the install.
The driver was installed successfully and ready to use.

Doesn't sound like the type of language that Epson would use. Been told that any text that reads like this does is probably a scam. Just goes to show that even established companies can't get it correct which makes us more wary.

I followed the instructions, there was no setup wizard. After the initial instructions went away, I connected the USB, as there were no instructions to connect. The printer was installed and worked via USB. But cannot be found via WiFi, and has installed drivers about five times, then comes up with a printer error. I searched without much help for an explanation of the error, but nothing helped. So I have given up with the install. Win 7 is ok and works well. So many thanks for your help, and time.
I would never chuck Windows 10 now, secure and almost trouble free + supported for a few more years than the excellent Windows 7
Bob's advice from September 3rd 2015 is worth repeating

I don't follow Bob's advice exactly , I have cloned the my laptop hard drives to a larger capacity laptop hard drive and kept the smaller ones as my clone, updated monthly using a All In 1 Hard Drive Disk Docking Station.
If I had a problem similar to John's problem I would have trialed installing Windows 7 on another hard drive and kept my Windows 10 drive intact, as solutions are usually found as Gary indicated, although I accept maybe not in John's case.
If only I had been savvy enough to use Macrium Reflect before I went on my first abortive Windows 10 upgrade I wouldn't have lost so many sent emails (Thanks to trusting a backup programme that didn't save emails!!)

Before I returned to Win 7, I had another try to find this printer. It still showed up as offline, so I went through the set up again. It now shows as multi-function device, but is not shown as off line.
It also shows up in the network, but not in connected devices. It says the ink is low, which is probably why it won`t print, but paper feeds through. I will find out when I get some ink, and try again....
I have image backups of Win 7 and Win 10. it takes about ten mins to change over.
