Motherboard ASUS P4C800 deluxe. 3 Ghz Pentium 4

Just re-installed Windows XP Home - last edition. SP3 is included.

Although a second drive DOES appear in the BIOS (Main and Boot tabs) it does NOT show in "My Computer". or System information (Start - Accessories)

Device Manager DOES show both drives.."Missing" drive NOT shown  in system information  All cables checked and OK..

C:\ drive is 189GB  "Missing drive" is 111GB.

Any ideas please

Re: XP Re-install
Hi Les

RIGHT CLICK on the "My Computer" icon in the Desktop.  SELECT "Manage" then SELECT "Disk Management".  You should see the disk drives attached to your PC.  It should be allocated as "D" Drive.  Let us know what you find.

Re: XP Re-install
Thank you Harry.  Proceeded as you directed and show Computer Management Dialog "Box".details:

Top part of screen shows;

Volume (C:)   Layout:  Partition,   Type:  Basic   File system: NFTS   Status: Healthy (system)

Capacity: 189.91GB      Free Space:  93%   Fault Tolerence:  No   Overheat:  0%

Second half of screen shows;

Disk 0   189.91GB  NTFS  Healthy (System)   Diagonal lines shade this section (Disk 0)

Disk 1    111.79GB   Unallocated. (All clear - NO diagonal lines)

Prior to the reinstall: both discs were formatted together with "Darik's Boot and Nuke" to thoroughly make sure

everything was erased. (5 hours 17 minutes)

Second drive shows in Bios (two tabs, as described) and in Device manager. Does NOT show in "My Computer".

On the "unseen" drive "Properties" shows "This device is working properly".

Tried updating driver but no respnse. Had to reboot to get rid of the driver updater screen (with rotating symbol).

Re: XP Re-install
Les, you're totally in the right place.

Now right click on the "unallocated" disc 1, choose "create partition" choose "primary partition" and then choose to Format with NTFS at the default allocation size.

I am saying this from memory not having uses XP for several years, but that's the principle!

Thank you Mark. Yes. it appears to work.

The drive shows in "My Computer" but nothing could be sent to it . Tried to Format from "My Computer". Message: Not possible.

At Computer Management display it was already formatting. Will report result later.

Format finished and drive was shown and useable.

Re: XP Re-install
I think we've been here before Les. IIRC this MB has both IDE and SATA connections and the correct SATA drivers need to be downloaded and installed, then setup to run in the BIOS.

Re: XP Re-install
That it likely Dave. Neverthless this was stalling me and, by the kindness of DvDoc users postings, It has been resolved.

If I remember correctly, you had a similar motherboard Dave. Perhaps you can enlighten me for outstanding problems?

1. I have been unable to install a driver for "WinXP Promise SATA378 (tm) IDE Controller"..

Device Manager shows this item twice. Is this needed as I am not using RAID?

2. Multimedia Controller is the same - two identical lines are shown in Device Manager.

3. On "Boot up"  a line of text quotes: "BIOS not installed".

I CAN get the BIOS - so what does this mean; and do I need to do something about it?

Re: XP Re-install
Correct, I did use the same MB for several years, it's long since gone to the big PC home in the sky. There are 2 SATA channels along with 2 IDE channels, each of the SATA's needs a controller even if not using the RAID. I can't remember why it needs a separate BIOS, this always gave me problems until I tracked it down one day and installed it, but for the life of me I can't remember now what or how I did to it!

There is some sort of 'Boot to controller' command on immediate startup before Windows loads, again I can't remember, it could be F6 or F11 / F12 - it should explain in the MB manual - available from ASUS, when it worked it was a great MB but when it didn't it was a right PITA to sort, sorry I can't really help any further.

Re: XP Re-install
Thanks for the input though Dave. XP computer is used for the many odd things .

Vista laptop I can just manage. Try to keep Windows 7 desktop for video editing.

Other computers are too old and far too slow. Dislike Windows 7 for email.
