Cuban Mojito

Here is a link to a video I recently made for an international bar consultancy (no I didn't know they existed either). It's the first of a trilogy, which could develop into a more comprehensive series.

The client was keen to give the films a very distinctive look. After a lot of versions, using all manner of 'looks', we decided on a cartoon effect. I used Toonit, from Red Giant, and after a 15 hour render, I think the results are quite good. I only say 'quite' because I don't think it works that well in the wide shots, but the close-ups seem ok.

Anyway, let me know what you think and any suggestions for improvements are eagerly sought!

Hi Dominic,
Firstly I'll say I rarely comment on stuff for review here as I believe it's down to self/client to discuss.. and it's usually after the fact, so pointless.
Yours is before, and includes cuba and drinks.. which tie in to 2 different projects I have on the go, so catches my eye.
I think the style comes over well, rough/ready Havana style and music doesn't drown, as it normally would in any Cuban (style) bar.
No issues with wide shots, but wonder if lemon/line/mint plant/mojito could have more vibrant colours. This will have the secondary beneficial effect of maintaining attention towards centre frame -which i think is perhaps what you have done already in choosing coloured objects, and will help emphasise ingredients.
The dark b/g is fine - again for focusing viewer to centre, but I wonder if the central area could be be a bit more bright/brash, maybe blacks/shades have been over crushed?

Dave.

Thanks Dave, helpful comments! I'll give the colours some more attention and bump the centre a bit too. I think that will work well.

I thought it was great! The effect has an edgy, rough-hewn feel that I think goes well with the subject matter. I have seen this kind of thing attempted before and it often comes across as clumsy. Not so here!

By the way, your vid REALLY made me want to have one of those drinks right now!!

Thanks, Mike! The client is very pleased, so I'm happy there too. I think Dave is right about some of the colours/brightness too. I have another couple of videos in this series that I'm putting finishing touches to (final delivery is Tuesday and I've got family dues to pay too!), so I fear I may not have time to tweak them as much as I'd like (the cartoon effect render is SUCH a drag and needs to be done every time there is a change).

Thanks very much for the comments and I hope you have a great Easter weekend!

Dominic

PS
I enjoyed your recent documentary - very nicely put together - I look forward to more. I started reading the comments on Youtube, then remembered why I always try to avoid doing exactly that - what a bunch of morons!!!

Thanks dominic! New webisode coming next week!

I was wondering...what didn't you like about your wide shots??

It wasn't so much the composition of the shots themselves, but the quality of the 'cartoonification' in those wider shots. It's there that the process shows up its weak points, when dealing with multiple, complex features - especially faces. Whilst the inanimate objects look good, the presenter is a bit of a mess. But overall, I think it works.

I'll be checking out you new episode in a while.
