Film only Weddings

Hi,

I have just declined a booking to film a wedding next year and let the bride edit it herself. She says that we are the only concern she has asked to quote that has refused to consider doing it. I have never entertained offering a filming only facility. (Seems the opposite of "Shoot It Yourself"). Just interested for your views, would you film a wedding and then hand over the raw footage?

Glyn.

I guess for some, work is work, though there's always the danger that the edit will crush any creative filming.
Anyone who does take this kind of work on needs to have some tight terms in their contract or there'll be a nagging over what they think you should have filmed.

Do not follow, I may not lead. Do not lead . . . I may not follow.

I offer that as a week day service, "Shoot & Play" which is a very basic edit, or they can edit themselves. Means I am done and dusted and free the next day.

Why not offer it as a service?
And charge appropriately. My guess is she wants to cut the vision because she feels it will save her money, probably not because she has a creative talent in editing.

Ask her beforehand if there are any specific shots she wants, then nail those as well as the others you would do.

Just archive the vision in case you get a call for help.

I used to offer this, with no hesitation at all....so long as you clearly state in a contract that they can't mention your name/logo anywhere (incase the edit is something you don't want to be associated with), and that they won't use it for their own gain (e.g. portfolio)

One tip (unless you charge alot for it) is to not offer this at weekends, coz you'll feel miffed when you get a £muchbigger film+edit enquiry in :)

I'm thinking of offering shoot it and edit it yourself weddings using clients's own mobile phone/handycam/whatever as long as they have iMovie or MovieMaker.

Myself and my assistants will provide observational support at various stages of the day and do expert spot checks on the editing when completed.

Our contract will ensure that we get good seats at the wedding breakfast, priority position for the buffet and decent rooms.

Anyone up for a franchise?

I'm a camera for hire, so am quite happy to film a wedding and then hand over the raw footage, though it's always been to an editor, not to the filmed subjects. It's always interesting to see what another editor makes of my footage afterwards, too.

Very rarely done this. In fact the only two times have both been this year. I took one on a Friday in July. I normally wouldn't have, hoping a full booking would surface. However, I already had 8 on that month so the idea of being edit free appealed to me. The Groom used to be a wedding videographer so there was a lot of talk of how I must feel under pressure. In all honesty I didn't. Perhaps the customer understanding the pressures of the day?

The other was more recent, a Tuesday in October so bit of a no brainer really. Although, I have a sneaky feeling they might come back to me for the edit.

The last line there is the clincher...... once they realise they (the client) has made a right hash of the job.....
