"The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announced that Apple® will become a member of the consortium’s Board of Directors.

'Apple is pleased to join the Blu-ray Disc Association board as part of our efforts to drive consumer adoption of HD,' said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

Blu-ray Discs will have five times larger capacity than today's DVDs, with a single-layer Blu-ray Disc holding up to 25 gigabytes of data and a double-layer Blu-ray Disc holding up to 50 gigabytes of data. Current DVDs hold 4.7 gigabytes on single-layer discs and 8.5 gigabytes on dual-layer discs.

Its Board of Directors consists of Apple; Dell Inc.; Hewlett Packard Company; Hitachi, Ltd.; LG Electronics Inc.; Mitsubishi Electric Corporation; Panasonic (Matsushita Electric); Pioneer Corporation; Royal Philips Electronics; Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.; Sharp Corporation; Sony Corporation; TDK Corporation; Thomson; Twentieth Century Fox; and Walt Disney Pictures and Television."

Thinking of the Apple/Pixar/Disney links, it's to be expectecd.

Remind me....this page gives the status of who's backing Blu-Ray and who's backing HD-DVDin Dec'04. Is it otherwise correct/complete?

It would appear Blu-Ray is a more capacious format, with more $$$billions$$$ behind it. (But.. it's not backward compatible with "SD-DVD" manufacturing process - is that right?)

Any bets on the final winner?

( I love the quotation in that page "...the porn industry, which releases upwards of 10,000 titles per year, is still undecided..." )

Lets not forget the role of the porn industry in driving the early adoption of the internet! It could well indeed be one of the main reasons for encouraging the rapid widespread uptake of High Definiton technology generally. For reasons I won't dwell on.... ;)
