Looking for a mic. to use with a Sony minidisk is no easy task.
Having tried an ATR 25 and found it too long to use on camera, I bought a Yoga EM400 tie clip from Maplin. Not that sensitive at –72db, the frequency response 100hz-16khz is ok, and recorded the Edinburgh Tattoo pretty well. But it suffers from high handling noise.

The Vivanco EM216 has too much bass and picks up hum. Very sensitive, but is made of plastic!

There is very little information about the Sony ECM MSD1. Apart from being made of ABS, and it`s small size, the frequency response is only known to Sony.

The other possibility is the Sony ECM MS908C. At 130cm long x 30mm diam response of 100hz-18khz is about all I know. Does anyone use either of these, and are they any good please.

Many thanks.

I have used a Sony ECM MS907 with Minidisc for a lot of live instrumental and group recording and have been very happy with the result. Bearing in mind the various compression algorithms that will be applied to the sound I had assumed the frequency response of the Microphone would be more than adequate.

Thanks David, I will see if I can find one to try locally. I think it`s probably the smallest I can get.

I have just bought the Sony MS907. Don`t like the stand, so bought an Anti Vibration holder @ £7.99 and a converter for the thread from Maplin. A Manfrotto thread converter fits this, and provides a ¼ whitworth for mounting.

In the next two weeks I shall be using it for real. So fingers crossed!

Yes, that was the first thing I bought too, oddly enough a similar rubbery one from Maplins.
Hope it works out.
