I’m looking to buy a camcorder capable of taking professional quality video which I can pixel track to composite with 3d rendered elements and be good enough to broadcast on TV within Europe if needs be. I know nothing about this field but i have a budget of about £5000 to start.

I have been using my personal Sony DCR PC8 dv cam for testing, but the results are not good enough for what i need (low res and lots of noise), I am thinking HD will be best to work with given it is higher resolution?

Also could anyone recommend any books/websites which can help me get to grips with this technology.

Thanks

For starters, "professional quality video" covers a multitude of sins, depending what you're doing - from low end corporate, weddings etc right up to the multi million pound feature industry. Different types of work have different needs.

Given the budget you quote, there are probably really two models on sale at the moment that are realistic for you, with two more announced to come soon - namely the FX1/Z1 from Sony and the HD100 from JVC, and soon to be joined by the HVX200 from Panasonic and the Xl-H1 from Canon. They each have their good and bad points, and are or more or less suitable depending on your work.

For starters, going through this forum (HDV and HD) and looking at topics that seem to refer to those cameras may be a good start - allow a little while!
